CHARLESTON

This is a song about nothing in particular other than the City of Charleston. Forgive me for there's only one chord in the entire song: just play D throughout, and different variations of the D-chord whenever it seems right or wrong. Also, done right this song needs waves and a ship's bell.

Spend some time down at th' harbour,
climbin' that gallows tree
From all those ancient steeples
them ghosts was talkin' at me
Sayin' "Get out girl, this city won't leave your soul
But, we can't tell ya where to go."

The Atlantic wind blew from the east
Like a kiss from ya' sweet old motha
And this lager tastes just like the breeze
that flows in from the harbour
Charleston, don't you ever try to leave
Say it like you'll make me believe

You'll get burned by the sun on your heart
the sun from all these southern belles
The daughters juke just like her
but they're a baby-sitter's hell
She'll say she thinks she loves you but never acts like it
and you'll stop believin' in all of this shit.

The Palmetto bends in the wind
comes back standin' strong
The river flows out over again
nothin' ever stays too long
Brave river, that name someone gave ya'
dancin' out over the town singin' "Oh-la-la"

The moon shines down like a love
shinin' your crescent path
From somewhere behind and above
and comin' from the past
Charleston, don't you ever try to leave
Say it like you'll make me believe

Constellations illustrate the map
fog's comin' from the graves
Tryin' to find a way to get out o' all that
but it gives back what you gave
run around crazy
you're losin' your head
time to run 'fore
you paint it all red.

run around crazy
you're losin your head
time to run 'fore
you paint it all red

Run around crazy
You're losin' your head
Time to run 'fore
You paint it all red.

Solitude and Sanctuary
An alley off old Dock Street
Feelin' like a refugee
with nothin' left to eat
Charleston, don't you ever try to leave
Say it like you'll make me believe.
