Bobby Cleary (Moonlight O'er Baghdad)

This is a story song about five friends who joined the military - from the point of view of the only survivor.

BOBBY CLEARY (MOONLIGHT O'ER BAGHDAD)
Maddie McGuire
(c) 2006 GirlMoon Music

(Em)(C)
This ol' moonlight o'er Baghdad
(Em)(C)
Makes me miss all that we had
(Am)
under moonlight and in the rain
(C)
In my Chevrolet just raisin' cane

Five young soldiers come home on leave
letting go of what no one would believe
two Army boys, three were sailors
Avoiding our duties and chores

(Em)(C)
under the boulevard's street lights
(Em)(C)
and I'm the only one left alive

Jason took on in the back in Mazar
the same damned place I got these scars
sometimes I still see his face at night
sometimes it wakes me with a fright

Jimmy lost his legs on Route Irish
climbed out of the wheelchair at the parish
all the papers still read of suicide
with the statue of Jesus at his side

Dylan lost touch until his wake in DC
and you, Bobby, taken my the sea.

{chorus}
(Am)(C)
A grown woman cries after all
(Am)(C)
even the hardest soldier takes a fall
(Em)(Am)
with the scars to show the world what they've known
(Am)(C)
I remember it rained that day
(Am)(C)
How you'd love this weather they'd say
(Em)(Am)
over closed caskets 'cause you can't be shown

we took your ashes up to the mountains
three thousand feet to the wind
over the valley and your hometown
almost saw your face in the clouds

I promise your memory to keep
Even if it keeps me from sleep
and when it rains over there in Iraq
I wish we, we were all back

safe and sound, me and you
cruisin' in my Malibu

{repeat chorus
